Avian Biodiversity Center
Contribution to Science
The Avian Biodiversity Center contributes to the knowledge and preservation of the genetic diversity of endangered avian breeds. Genetic diversity is crucial for the long-term health and resilience of these animals, enabling them to adapt to changing environmental conditions and enhancing their overall survival rates. Different chicken genotypes may be better suited to specific local conditions and agricultural practices, supporting sustainable farming systems and reducing reliance on singular genetics that may be more vulnerable to diseases or environmental changes.
Societal Impact
Chickens and other domestic birds are not only a source of food but also hold cultural heritage significance with historical and traditional value in many regions. Preserving diverse poultry breeds helps maintain traditional agricultural practices and safeguards rare and endangered breeds.
For the poultry industry, maintaining a diverse genetic pool is essential for breeding healthier, more productive, and efficient chicken strains. This genetic variety supports the long-term sustainability of the poultry sector.
The Center also engages the public through science outreach activities, such as the "Open Day at the University of Lisbon," "Summer at ULisboa," and "Futurália." It welcomes visits from enthusiasts and breeders of ornamental breeds, fostering broader community engagement.
Application in Education
The Avian Biodiversity Center is a crucial resource for skill development among students. It plays an integral role in courses such as "Poultry Production," "Animal Physiology," and "Animal Production Systems in the Tropics" at the School of Agriculture, University of Lisbon.
